Under Governor Josh Shapiro's proposal, the maximum standard rebate would increase from $650 to $1,000.
This is incredibly meaningful change for a program that has a long history of delivering essential support to people in need.
Harrisburg, PA – Pennsylvania Department of Aging Secretary Jason Kavulich and Acting Secretary of Revenue Pat Browne this week penned a joint op-ed to advocate for Governor Josh Shapiro's budget proposal to expand the Property Tax/Rent Rebate (PT/RR) program.
The PT/RR program benefits Pennsylvania 65 and older, widows and widowers 50 and older, and Pennsylvanians with disabilities who are 18 and older.
As part of his 2023-24 budget proposal, Governor Shapiro wants to increase the maximum standard rebate from $650 to $1,000, cap the income limits for both homeowners and renters at $45,000, and tie those income limits to the cost of living so that no Pennsylvanian is priced out of the program. These proposed changes would allow an additional 175,000 Pennsylvanians to receive support from the program, nearly doubling the number of people who currently qualify.
