Camp Hill, PA – Michael Gourley, Superintendent of the State Correctional Institution at Camp Hill, reported that Inmate Spencer Kassel, 35, died on January 29, after an assault by another inmate in a recreation yard.

Prison staff immediately responded to the incident and provided life-saving measures. Lower Allen EMS arrived and advanced life support measures were continued. Inmate Kassel was pronounced dead at 8:51 a.m.

Kassel was serving a one-to-two-year sentence for Aggravated Assault [18.2702.a3] out of Centre County. He had been at SCI Camp Hill since December 9, 2024.

In accordance with state policy, Pennsylvania State Police were notified and will conduct an investigation. The official cause of death will be determined by the Cumberland County Coroner’s Office.

The deceased’s next of kin has been notified.
