Mountain bikes may be used on most roads and trails in the Bald Eagle State Forest. The degree of difficulty varies considerably from easy to extreme, from gently sloping forest and logging roads to rocky, ridgetop trails and steep, rocky climbs.
Only the natural areas and Mid State Trail (mapped and blazed orange) and district hiking trails (mapped and blazed yellow) are closed to mountain biking.
Trail Blaze Guide
For safety and navigating, recreationists in Bald Eagle State Forest should understand the color-coded trail blazes posted on district trails.
The Bald Eagle State Forest Trail Blaze Guide (PDF) explains the meanings of the shapes and colors of encountered blazes.
Central Mountains Shared Use Trail
The Central Mountains Shared Use Trail (PDF) is a group of interconnected trails, totaling 120 miles, developed for non-motorized use (hike, bike, and horseback) in the northern third of Bald Eagle State Forest and southern Tiadaghton State Forest.
The map has labeled trail/road segment distances in miles to help users create loops and help plan routes based on ability.
Electric Bike (E-bike) Use
E-bikes are permitted on approved mountain bike trails and roads, provided they meet all the following standards:
- Weigh no more than 100 pounds
- Do not exceed 20 miles-per-hour using the motor
- Have motors that do not exceed 750 watts
