Site Facts
Municipality/County: Chanceford Township, York County
HSCA site since: 2024
Primary Contaminants of Concern: Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) PFOA and PFOS are part of a larger class of chemicals known as Perfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS).
Why is DEP Investigating?
- On January 14, 2023 Pennsylvania’s Environmental Quality Board established a State Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) of 14 nanograms per liter (ng/L) for PFOA and 18 ng/L for PFOS. DEP’s HSCA section has identified water above the MCLs within the Site area.
- In March 2024, DEP was notified that a regulated supply well servicing the Clearview Elementary School was found to contain concentrations of PFOA and PFOS that exceeded the MCLs for PFOA and PFOS.
- DEP will investigate groundwater in the area to determine the extent of PFOA and PFOS in the aquifer underlying the area.
DEP’s Current Investigation and Response
- On March 7th, 2024, DEP coordinated with the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS) to procure and deliver approximately 1600 gallons of potable water to be distributed in 16oz bottles to the staff and students of the School. DEP will continue to procure and deliver additional bottled water to meet the needs of the school through April 6th, 2024.
- DEP anticipates starting site assessment activities in late summer of 2024
Source Investigation
- DEP is looking into all Potentially Responsible Parties (PRPs). If you have any information related to any potential sources of PFAS contamination, please feel free to provide that information to DEP using the contact information at the bottom of this page.
