TITLE: Submission of Mine Maps when a Mine is Abandoned
EFFECTIVE DATE: April 1, 2002
AUTHORITY: Section 240 of the Pennsylvania Bituminous Coal Mine Act, 52 P.S. Sections 701-240 and 701-702 and Section 305 of the Pennsylvania Anthracite Coal Mine Act, 52 P.S. Sections 70-305 and 70-1402.
POLICY: Mine operators will have an option to submit to the Department final mine map in an acceptable electronic format in lieu of tracings or prints.
PURPOSE: This technical guidance is intended to encourage mine operators to submit a final mine map in an electronic format that is compatible with software utilized by the Mine Safety Engineering Services Division. This will eliminate the need for the Department to scan maps to convert them to electronic format and it will result in better quality maps.
APPLICABILITY: This guidance is applicable to mine operators and to Mine Safety staff.

This document establishes the framework, within which DEP will exercise its administrative discretion in the future. DEP reserves the discretion to deviate from this policy statement if circumstances warrant.

TECHNICAL GUIDANCE:
- Digital images of final mine maps, capable of being converted into an Autocad file, may be submitted to the Bureau of Mine Safety in lieu of the tracings or prints required under Section 240 of the Pennsylvania Bituminous Coal Mine Act and Section 305 of the Anthracite Coal Mine Act.
- Digital images of final mine maps are to be submitted to: Bureau of Mine Safety, New Stanton District Office, 131 Broadview Road, New Stanton, PA 15672.
- These digital images of final mine maps will be in lieu of the final mine map tracings or prints submitted to the Department.
- All digital mine maps are to be submitted in a read only format and will be certified by an accompanying letter and attached seal.
