Penn State University’s College of Agricultural Sciences, together with other partners, has hosted two Pennsylvania in the Balance conferences in 2016 and 2022. Diverse stakeholders attended both events, which provided a collaborative forum where motivated leaders in agriculture and the environment identified new, innovative solutions that are helping to ensure vibrant, productive agriculture, while meeting water quality goals for Pennsylvania’s rivers and streams and the Chesapeake Bay.

Clear themes and initial recommendations emerged from these conferences that have form the basis of a consensus-based, collaborative strategy to ensure profitable and productive agriculture while achieving water quality goals. Efforts that have come out of this strategy embrace agriculture and its ingrained culture of stewardship, and look to leadership from agriculture to be a solution to clean water.
