Home Heating, Efficiency, and Conservation

Home Heating

Are you prepared for the heating season?  Safety, ensuring enough supply, and efficiency of equipment are all factors to consider during the heating season.  Learn more about safety and maintaining fuel supply (JPG).  Get Your Home Ready for Winter, "H.E.A.T." efficiently with ENERGY STAR this winter. (Article Part 1 | Article Part 2) This will help improve your home's comfort, save energy, and save money while protecting the environment at the same time.

Efficiency and Conservation

Did you know that according to the US Census Bureau, 99% of homes in PA were built prior to our current residential energy code, the 2009 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC)? The 2009 IECC improved home performance by 30% over PA’s first model energy code (1983’s Act 222), while the current “national” model energy code, the 2015 IECC improves performance by another 30%.  If homes in PA were built to the 2015 IECC, they would cost 30% less to operate than homes built in 2010, or 60% less than homes built prior to 1983. Do not assume that just because your home is recently constructed–or even new–that there are no opportunities to save energy.

Measure Your Energy Usage

How can you tell if your home is efficient? The first step to improving the efficiency of your home is to assess how much energy your home uses to help determine what measures you can take to improve energy efficiency.

Improving Home Performance

Taking steps to conserve energy and install energy efficient products and equipment will not only help you save energy, but will improve the environment and leave you with more disposable income for other necessities. Unfortunately, a "one size fits all" approach does not exist for energy efficiency and renewable energy in the home. Every home is unique – sometimes even on the same block! – as owners have changed windows or heating systems, or your house may be oriented differently to the sun or have a different number of occupants. Home Energy Rating and Labeling

Would you like to purchase a home or products or own a home knowing it is more energy efficient than others? There are labeling programs for both homes and products.
