Insurance Coverage for Over-the-Counter Contraception

What's New?

The first-ever FDA-approved, over-the-counter (OTC) daily birth control pill is now available across the state.  This means individuals are no longer required to have a prescription to have access to a daily oral contraceptive.

Is This Covered by My Insurance?

We are strongly encouraging Pennsylvania insurers to cover OTC contraceptives with or without a prescription, and without requiring individuals to complete a drug exception process (that is, health plans providing essential health benefits must have a process in place allowing the consumer or their prescribing physician to request and get access to clinically appropriate medication not covered by their health plan).

Pennsylvanians should contact their insurer to see how OTC contraception may be covered under their plan.

What if I have Questions or Issues?
