Bridge Project on Old Route 99 in McKean Township, Erie County to Start Soon

A $3.6 million project to replace three bridges that carry Old Route 99 over Lamson Run in McKean Township, Erie County is scheduled to start next week.

Work will include removal and replace of three existing concrete bridges one at a time. The project will also include minimal paving at each end of the bridges, drainage improvements, guiderail updates, seeding, and new signs.

Construction is expected to begin April 21, 2025, weather permitting, and is expected to be completed by December 2025.

The project will require a detour, which will be posted using Route 99, Old Route 99, and Golden Road. It is expected to be in place for six months.

Drivers should also be alert for traffic pattern shifts and lane restrictions.

The contractor is Chivers Construction Company of Erie, PA. The contract cost is $3,609,457, which is to be paid with a combination federal, state, and local funds. A portion of the money for construction is being provided by PennDOT through a targeted effort that was focused on encouraging counties to create new funding for local bridge projects.

All the bridges are owned and maintained by McKean Township. Two of the bridges were built in 1913 and one was built in 1941. All three are rated in poor condition and two are posted with weight limits. They are used by approximately 600 to 725 vehicles a day, on average.

This year PennDOT’s Northwest Region expects to work on more than 100 projects. To see a full listing of all the anticipated work, check out the 2025 Construction Book located under the Partner Resources section at www.penndot.pa.gov/District1.
