The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and the Borough of Edinboro today announced the start of a $650,000 project to construct a new sidewalk along Route 6N.
Work will include the creation of 0.37 miles of ADA compliant sidewalk that will extend from the existing sidewalk on the south side of Route 6N (Waterford Street) past the U.S. Post Office to the Scotland Road entrance of the PennWest – Edinboro campus. The project also includes construction of a pedestrian bridge over Darrows Creek, tree removal, and signs.
“The Borough of Edinboro is excited for the installation of this sidewalk,” said Jason Spangenberg, Borough Manager. “Pedestrian safety is extremely important to us, and this sidewalk will provide safe pedestrian access to Edinboro’s post office as well as provide a safe route for residents and university students to walk to the Edinboro downtown business district.”
Construction is expected to begin April 1, 2025, weather permitting. The majority of the project is expected to be completed this year with the possibility of some finishing work in spring 2026.
The contractor is XL Excavating of Cambridge Springs, PA. The contract cost is $658,041.82, which is to be paid with TASA (Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside) federal funds that were granted to the Borough of Edinboro, which will maintain the sidewalk and bridge once they are finished.
Most of the work will be done off-road but motorists may encounter temporary lane restrictions with traffic controlled by flaggers.
Motorists are urged to slow down when driving in work zones, and also to be alert to changing conditions, avoid distractions and to pay attention to signs and flaggers. Drive responsibly in work zones for your safety and the safety of the workers.
