Pittsburgh, PA – PennDOT District 11 is announcing a portion of the High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes in the City of Pittsburgh and Ross Township, Allegheny County will reopen Tuesday morning, March 18.
Beginning at approximately 4 a.m. Tuesday morning, the portion of the HOV lanes between the I-279 Perrysville Avenue interchange in Ross Township and the North Shore in the City of Pittsburgh will reopen to normal operations. The following access points will reopen to traffic:

OUTBOUND
Entrances

Exits

Due to a deteriorated pier, the I-579 section of the HOV lanes will remain closed to traffic until a repair can be made. Access to the I-579 HOV lanes is prohibited and has been restricted with barrier at the Bedford Avenue gate and on the I-279 HOV portion.
Additionally, to help mitigate congestion the HOV 2+ restriction will be lifted for traffic traveling outbound until further notice. The two-person requirement will remain in effect for motorists traveling inbound.
The HOV lanes are used to reduce congestion along Interstate 279 (Parkway North) by promoting ridesharing via carpooling, van pooling, or public transportation. Under normal operations, with the exception of motorcycles, all vehicles using the HOV lanes must have at least two people in them from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Also, trucks are not permitted on the HOV.
To help keep motorists informed, PennDOT has created an email distribution list for I-279 Parkway North traffic advisories. Enroll by sending email addresses to stcowan@pa.gov. Please write “Subscribe – Parkway North” in the subject line.
