Pittsburgh, PA – PennDOT District 11 is announcing a single-lane restriction on northbound Route 28 in the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County has been extended indefinitely.
A single-lane restriction was implemented on northbound Route 28 just south of the I-279 North/East Ohio Street exit at 9 a.m. Friday to accommodate inspection activities. Crews found significant deterioration of a pier that carries the I-579 High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane over Route 28.
The department has determined the closure of the I-579 HOV lane was necessary until a permanent repair can be made. A temporary support structure will be installed which requires the long-term single-lane restriction on northbound Route 28. Additional lane restrictions on southbound Route 28 may occur. Ramp access to the Chestnut Street and I-279 North/East Ohio Street exits will be maintained.
Additionally, the I-279/I-579 HOV lanes are currently closed indefinitely. The department is evaluating options to reopen the I-279 portion of the HOV lanes to assist with traffic flow.
