PennDOT Restores Speed Limit on Several Area Roadways in Allegheny, Beaver counties

Speed Restrictions Remain in Lawrence County

Pittsburgh, PA – PennDOT has lifted the temporary speed limit restrictions placed on several roadways in Allegheny and Beaver counties.

Due to the winter storm, speed limits were reduced to 45 mph on the following highways:

Allegheny County

  • Interstates 79, 376 (Parkways East and West), 279 (Parkway North), and 579
  • Route 28

Beaver County

  • Interstate 376 (Beaver Valley Expressway)

PennDOT is urging motorists to avoid unnecessary travel but those who must head out will still see speeds reduced to 45 mph on the following highways in Lawrence County:

Lawrence County

  • Interstates 79 and 376

On roadways with speed restrictions, commercial vehicles not affected by restrictions on these or other roadways must move to the right lane.

Restrictions are underway, and will be communicated via variable message boards, the 511PA traveler information website and smartphone apps. Motorists can also sign up for personalized alerts on the website. Restrictions will be lifted as quickly as possible when conditions are safe. Restrictions can be changed based on conditions on the roadways, and reports from first responders, law enforcement and PennDOT and PA Turnpike personnel.

Although PennDOT crews have been treating roadways, the department’s primary goal is to keep roads passable, not completely free of ice and snow. PennDOT will continue to treat roadways throughout the storm until precipitation stops and roads are clear.

Motorists can check conditions on major roadways by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras. 511PA is also available through a smartphone application for iPhone and Android devices, by calling 5-1-1, or by following regional X alerts.
