Interstate 70 and Route 51 Lane Restrictions This Week in Westmoreland County

Uniontown, PA – Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) District 12 is announcing scheduled single-lane restrictions next week on Interstate 70 and Route 51 in Rostraver Township, Westmoreland County. All work depends on weather and operations.

Tuesday, April 1

  • Daytime, 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM
  • I-70 eastbound and westbound
    • Between Exit 49 (Smithton) and exits 46A/46B (Route 51)
  • Crews from Geronimo Painting will be conducting containment work on the Matthew Smelser Memorial Bridge.

Wednesday, April 2 to Thursday, April 3

  • Overnight, 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM
  • I-70 eastbound and westbound
    • Between Exit 44 (Arnold City) and Exit 49 (Smithton)
  • Route 51 southbound, using bi-directional flagging for northbound lane
    • Between Concord Lane and Route 981/Finley Road
  • Crews from Golden Triangle and J.C. Lee will be setting beams for the new bridge to carry Route 51 over I-70.

Thursday, April 3 to Friday, April 4

  • Overnight, 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM
  • I-70 eastbound and westbound
    • Between Exit 44 (Arnold City) and Exit 49 (Smithton)
  • Crews from Golden Triangle will place overhang jacks onto the beams for the new bridge to carry Route 51 over I-70.

Friday, April 4 to Saturday, April 5

  • 8:00 PM to 6:00 PM (22 hours)
  • I-70 westbound, and temporarily eastbound
    • Between Exit 44 (Arnold City) to Exit 49 (Smithton)
  • Crews from B&K Enterprises and Golden Triangle will be setting and resetting barriers on I-70 for the traffic switch in the next phase of the I-70 at Route 51 interchange traffic control plan.

This work is part of the $120.6 million Interstate 70 Project involving the widening and reconstruction of Interstate 70 along with the reconstruction of the Route 51 Interchange (Exit 46) to replace it with a Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI). To accommodate the new interchange, the plans include one mile of reconstruction and widening on Route 51, and several intersecting roadways, including the relocation of Finley Road and Route 981. The project is anticipated to be completed in October 2027.
