Shapiro Administration Highlights 99 Miles Paved and 85 Bridges Repaired or Replaced in Southwest Pennsylvania During 2024 Construction Season

Uniontown, PA – Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) southwest region District 12, encompassing Fayette, Greene, Washington, and Westmoreland counties, is closing out a successful 2024 construction season. With a contract value of $380 million, the district worked productively with private industry teams on 95 active projects.

The year’s 47 finished projects – which include two local projects and two multi-modal local projects – were (or will be) put out for bid at $139 million. District 12:

  • Repaired or replaced 60 bridges.
  • Conducted 25 on-demand bridge repairs.
  • Repaired 21 slides.
  • Paved 99 roadway miles.
  • Preserved 450 roadway miles.

The Shapiro Administration has been investing in our communities, responding to emergencies, and supporting safe travel for people and goods across Pennsylvania,” PennDOT Secretary Michael Carroll said. “The PennDOT team and our industry partners have made significant progress this year.”

Statewide from January through October, 5,385 roadway miles were improved, including 1,941 miles of paving. In the same timeframe, work advanced on 401 state and locally owned bridges. Additionally, 356 construction contracts for highway, bridge, and other improvement projects were completed statewide through PennDOT's private-sector partners so far this year.

Since taking office, Governor Josh Shapiro has secured over $300 million in new infrastructure funding to maintain Pennsylvania’s roads and bridges – reducing the Pennsylvania State Police’s reliance on the Motor License Fund and delivering more funding for transportation while ensuring our law enforcement officers are sustainably funded.

“District 12 is proud of the locally sourced, manufactured, and constructed bridge and roadway improvements we delivered for our customers in 2024. We are excited to start with the equally challenging portfolio of scheduled projects within our four counties in 2025,” said PennDOT Assistant District 12 Executive for Construction Bill Beaumariage. “We could not accomplish this without the talent and dedication of our local stone queries, asphalt, concrete, and steel fabrication plants, union halls, construction, and consulting firms.”
