PennDOT/BPC Announce Closure of Exit 232 (Welcome Center) Off Interstate 81 Southbound and Ramp Closures for Route 171 in Susquehanna County

Dunmore, PA – Motorists are advised that the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and Bridging Pennsylvania Constructors (BPC) are announcing the closure of the ramp to the Pennsylvania Welcome Center off of  Interstate 81 southbound in support of the I-81 Susquehanna Bridges Project. The ramp will remain closed until the winter of 2025. The Welcome Center will remain open with access from Route 11.

In addition, Exit 230 (Route 171/Great Bend/Susquehanna) will be closed to Route 171 through the summer of 2025. The detour is as follows:

  • Continue on Interstate 81 Southbound to Exit 223 (Route 492/New Milford), 
  • Turn left onto Route 492 heading Westbound,  
  • Turn right onto Route 11 and travel North to Great Bend

The ramp from Route 171 to Interstate 81 Southbound will be closed for about 1 week. The detour is as follows:

  • Follow Route 11 South from Great Bend to New Milford, 
  • Turn left onto Route 492 heading Eastbound, 
  • Turn left on Ramp to Interstate 81 Northbound to Exit 230 (Route 171/Great Bend/Susquehanna)

Lastly, the following ramp closures and traffic switches will take place beginning Monday, March 24, 2024.

  • Interstate 81 southbound to Exit 230 (Great Bend/Susquehanna) to Route 171 will be closed until the summer of 2025. 
  • Route 171 to Interstate 81 Southbound will be closed for about 1 week to complete the tie-in. 
  • There will be a long-term single lane closure on Interstate 81 Southbound between mile markers 228 to 232 as part of the traffic shift through the first week of April 2025.
