PennDOT to Begin Lansdowne Avenue Corridor Safety Improvement Project in Delaware County

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that construction is underway for a safety improvement project along the Lansdowne Avenue corridor, which spans from Marshall Road to Baltimore Avenue in Lansdowne, Yeadon, and Darby boroughs in Delaware County.

Under this safety improvement project, the contractor will enhance the project corridor by installing retroreflective backplates on traffic signals, coordinating the timing of arterial signals, adding pedestrian countdown timers to new signal poles, installing additional lighting and mast arms, and designing and constructing ADA-compliant ramps where necessary. Additionally, the project will include installing fiber optic cables on existing utility poles to synchronize signals between Marshall Road and Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital.

This project includes the following intersections along the Lansdowne Avenue corridor: Marshall Road, Plumstead Avenue, Essex Avenue, Greenwood Avenue, Stewart Avenue, Baltimore Avenue, Providence Road, Baily Road, and Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital.

The project aims to enhance travel safety along the corridor by reducing the high frequency of angle and rear-end crashes. This will result in a significant decrease in both fatal and injury crashes, creating a safer corridor for everyone.

Beginning Monday, April 14, through Friday, April 25, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, a weekday lane closure with flagging is scheduled on northbound Lansdowne Avenue/Main Street between Lincoln Avenue and U.S. 13 (MacDade Boulevard) in Darby and Yeadon boroughs for fiber optic cable installation.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work area because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

Kuharchick Construction, Inc., of Exeter, Pennsylvania, is the general contractor on the project, which is financed with 100 percent federal funds. The project's physical completion is expected to finish in the spring of 2026.
