PennDOT Announces Online Plans Display for Route 4033 (Milton Grove Road) Bridge Replacement Project in Rapho Township, Lancaster County

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) invites the public to an online plan display regarding the Route 4033 (Milton Grove Road) bridge replacement project over Back Run in Rapho Township, Lancaster County. The purpose of this project is to address deficiencies on the bridge and provide continued access on Milton Grove Road over Back Run.

The existing structure was built in 1934 and rehabilitated in 1950 and is a single-span steel I-beam bridge supported on masonry abutments. The existing bridge length is approximately 31 feet. The existing structure is in poor condition and nearing the end of its serviceable life.

The proposed replacement structure will be a single span composite prestressed concrete spread box beam bridge with a 42-foot length, measured center-center of bearings.

This section of Milton Grove Road has an average daily traffic volume of 2181 vehicles per day (vpd).

The bridge will be closed for approximately 6 months to all traffic during construction. The proposed 5.7-mile detour will use Route 772, Route 230, Route 4017 (Snyder Road) and Route 4010/T-356 (Mount Pleasant Road). Access to all driveways within the project limits will be maintained during construction. Overhead utilities are present at the site and utility relocations are currently not anticipated.

The project is currently in design, and construction work is anticipated to begin in Spring 2027 and last approximately 2 months.

The purpose of the plans display is to introduce the project and solicit public input, questions, or concerns regarding the project.

A digital version of the project plans and information will be available to view online through May 14, 2025.

Information, including bridge plans and an interactive comment form, can be found by visiting the PennDOT District 8 website, PennDOT District 8, clicking Projects Near You listed on the left side of the page, then the District 8 Projects, and choosing Milton Grove Road over Back Run Bridge Replacement.
