Pavement Rehabilitation Project Continues on Route 581 in Cumberland County

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that a 7.14-mile pavement rehabilitation project on Route 581 between Interstate 81 and Interstate 83 in Cumberland County continues next week with work within the eastern portion of the project limits.

Next week, the contractor will implement long-term shoulder closures at two locations on eastbound Route 581 between Sporting Hill Road and Route 11/15. A long-term right lane restriction will be implemented on eastbound Route 581 on a three-lane section of highway just west of I-83.

Weather permitting, the nights of Monday, April 7, and Tuesday April 8, the contractor will set up long-term right shoulder closures and narrow the eastbound Route 581 travel lanes to 10-feet wide between Mile Marker 3.5 and Mile Marker 3.8 and between Mile Marker 4.9 and Mile Marker 5.1. Temporary concrete barrier will be placed along the shoulder so that new permanent concrete barrier and reinforced concrete shoulders can be constructed along with new guiderail tie-ins.

The right lane of eastbound Route 581 between Mile Marker 6.2 and Mile Marker 6.5 will be closed and a temporary concrete barrier will be placed along the right lane so that new permanent concrete barrier and reinforced concrete shoulders can be constructed along with new guiderail tie-ins.

Traffic on this three-lane section of eastbound Route 581 will be maintained with both the left and center lanes open to traffic.

In addition to the work on eastbound Route 581, the right shoulder along the northbound Route15 ramp to eastbound Route 581 will be closed to place temporary concrete barrier so that new concrete barrier and reinforced concrete shoulders can be constructed along with new guiderail tie-ins.

Work at these locations will take approximately 8 weeks to complete. Two lanes will be maintained from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Between 8:00 PM and 6:00 AM Sunday through Thursday nights, motorist can expect single lane closures while work is being performed. This may cause delays.

Travelers should be alert and drive with caution through the work zone.

This work is part of a project that consists of concrete patching, diamond grinding and replacement of two traffic counter device locations, and other miscellaneous construction on Route 581 in East Pennsboro, Hampden, and Lower Allen townships, and Camp Hill and Lemoyne boroughs. This work will be performed at night between Interstate 81 and Interstate 83. There will be nighttime lane restrictions in both directions of Route 581.

Kinsley Construction, LLC, of York, PA, is the contractor on this $15,482,961 project.

All work is expected to be completed by September 8, 2027.
