Tonight’s Work on Cameron Street in Harrisburg is Postponed Due to Weather

Contractor to shift traffic and restrict lanes for work related to Cameron Street widening

Harrisburg, PA
– The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that work to implement a traffic shift tonight (Sunday, April 6) on Cameron Street between Paxton Street and Sycamore Street in the City of Harrisburg, Dauphin County, has been postponed due to weather.

Weather permitting, the shift will be implemented the nights of Monday, April 7, and Tuesday, April 8. This work previously was planned for tonight and Monday night, but tonight’s work was cancelled due to the forecast for rain.

When the shift is completed, Cameron Street will be reduced to a single lane in each direction so drainage work, new curbs and sidewalks and other construction activities can be performed on the eastbound side of the street.

Traffic will be shifted toward the westbound side of Cameron Street so work related to widening the street on the eastbound side can be performed. This will result in a long-term pattern restricting traffic on Cameron Street to a single lane in each direction.

Left turn lanes on Cameron Street at the Paxton Street intersection will remain open.

This long-term traffic pattern is expected to remain in place through the summer.

This may cause delays, especially during peak hours such as the morning and afternoon commute.

Travelers should be alert and drive with caution through the work zone.

This work is associated with the first of two contracts for East Shore Section 3 of the larger I-83 Capital Beltway Project.

This contract includes widening and reconstructing portions of the I-83 roadway, construction of overhead bridges at 29th Street and 19th Street, construction of the new Cameron Street Interchange, removing the 13th Street interchange, and roadway improvements along the Cameron Street, 19th Street and 29th Street corridors.

There may be significant impacts to traffic during the life of this project, including traffic shifts, lane restrictions and road closures/detours. Advance notice will be issued prior to any major traffic impacts.

New Enterprise Stone and Lime Company, Inc., of New Enterprise, PA, is the contractor on this $154,627,000 project.

All work on this contract is expected to be completed by October 12, 2027.

The second East Shore Section 3 contract is expected to be under construction from 2025 to 2028 and includes widening and reconstruction on I-83, construction of the 13th Street bridge and approaches, and construction of the 17th Street interchange and widening 17th Street.
