Schedule Update: Overhead Sign Truss Installation Planned on I-81 in Harrisburg Area

Nighttime lane closures, short-term stoppages will now be the week of Feb. 10

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today the installation of overhead sign trusses is expected to begin February 10 on Interstate 81 in the Harrisburg area. This work, which previously was expected to be performed the week of February 3, will be performed at night and require lane closures and short-term stoppages on I-81.

Weather permitting, beginning Monday, February 10, there will be lane closures from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM on southbound I-81 between Exit 69 (Progress Avenue) and Exit 67 (Route 22/322), and on northbound I-81 between Exit 65 (Route 11/15) and Exit 67 (Route 22/322).

There will be intermittent stoppages of up to 15 minutes between midnight and 5:00 AM within these limits.

Motorists should be alert and watch for stopped or slow-moving traffic.

This work is expected to be completed by the end of the week.

The old signs will be removed later. A press release will be issued prior to this work.

Overhead sign structure work continues during the day on I-81. The contractor is working along the shoulder or in the median, so traffic impacts are minimal.

This work is part of a project that includes bridge preservation work, approach pavement work, sign and sign structure replacements, and other miscellaneous construction on I-81 from Progress Avenue in the City of Harrisburg to the Susquehanna River at the George N. Wade Bridge in Susquehanna Township, and on Route 22 from Elmerton Avenue to about 0.5 miles north of I-81 in the city.

Travelers are reminded to be alert for these operations, to obey work zone signs, and to slow down when approaching and traveling through work zones for their safety as well as for the safety of the road crews.

Deblin, Inc., of Mechanicsburg, PA, is the prime contractor on this $9,884,046 project.
