Getting Customer Service Done: Shapiro Administration Reminds Pennsylvanians They Can ‘Skip a Trip’ by Using Convenient, Online Driver and Vehicle Services to Complete More than 20 Common Transactions

Online services reinforce Governor Josh Shapiro’s commitment to providing better access and quality customer service for Pennsylvanians.

More than 40 driver licensing and motor vehicle forms can now be submitted electronically, doubling the number made available early in the Shapiro Administration.

Harrisburg, PA – As a way to provide greater access and convenience to customers, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) reminds Pennsylvanians that many driver and vehicle services are available online, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at no additional cost. PennDOT’s Driver and Vehicle Services online options are another way for residents to complete certain common transactions from anywhere.

“The Shapiro Administration is committed to making government work for our citizens, and that includes PennDOT providing the best possible customer service experience, whether online or in person,” said PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll. “We are always ready to serve those who need to visit a Driver License Center, but we also want to ensure Pennsylvanians are aware of the many services they can complete online without making a trip.”

With demand increasing at Driver License Centers as more residents seek REAL IDs ahead of federal REAL ID enforcement starting May 7, PennDOT encourages customers to consider using online services whenever possible.

Some common transactions customers can complete online include change of address for non-commercial license and ID card holders, renewal and duplicates of non-commercial driver licenses and ID cards, paying a driver license restoration fee, and obtaining driver history records and restoration requirement letters. There are no additional fees for using online services. To access these services and learn more, visit PennDOT’s website.

To further assist customers, more than 40 driver licensing and motor vehicle forms can now be submitted electronically, doubling the number made available early in the Shapiro Administration. These commonly used driver licensing and motor vehicle forms that require a signature can now be completed, signed, and submitted online, including the self-certification form for commercial driving, the statement of non-operation of vehicles form, several medical forms, and more. Allowing customers to submit these forms electronically allows PennDOT staff to start processing them more quickly, cutting down on customer wait times.

Customers who need in-person assistance can still visit PennDOT’s Driver License Centers during normal business hours. However, customers who want to avoid potential lines during peak times can use PennDOT’s online services any time of day any day of the week.

While getting a REAL ID is optional in Pennsylvania, more than 2.5 million Pennsylvanians have chosen to get one. Beginning May 7, 2025, a REAL ID or another form of federally acceptable identification (such as a valid passport or military ID) will be required to:

  • Board domestic commercial flights.
  • Enter a military base.
  • Enter certain federal facilities that require a federally acceptable form of ID.

A valid passport will still be required for international travel.

PennDOT is holding REAL ID Days on select Mondays when the centers are typically closed. During these events, centers will be exclusively processing REAL IDs to help Pennsylvanians obtain a REAL ID before enforcement begins. The centers will still be open during their normal hours and people can also get a REAL ID or conduct other driver license business during that time. For a complete list of REAL ID Days events, visit PennDOT’s website.

Although a REAL ID or other TSA-acceptable form of ID will be needed to fly domestically beginning May 7, Pennsylvanians can apply for a REAL ID at any time – before, on or after the enforcement date – depending on their situation. REAL ID products are a permanent part of PennDOT’s services. If you're not sure whether a REAL ID is right for you, our REAL ID online wizard may be able to help.

Federal REAL ID regulations require that PennDOT must verify several documents from people who are applying for a REAL ID. For a complete list of documents, visit PennDOT’s website.

Customers who received their first Pennsylvania driver's license, learner's permit, or photo ID card after September 1, 2003, may already have their REAL ID documentation on file with PennDOT. These customers can  apply for REAL ID pre-verification and order their REAL ID online.
