Project Overview
County: Erie
State Route: 4034
Local Name: Bayfront Parkway
Project Type: Intersection Improvement and Multimodal Project
Last Updated: April 9, 2024
Improvements at the intersection of Sassafras Street Extension and the Bayfront Parkway are expected to be included in Stages 1 and 2 of the project, happening in 2023 and 2024.
Improvements will include construction of the multi-lane roundabout, and completion of missing links within the multi-use trail on the waterfront side of the parkway and along Sassafras Street Extension leading toward the lake.
Additional information about Roundabouts, including handouts and safety statistics, can be found under the Road Design section of the website.
Also pictured in this rendering above are West Front Street Improvements and upgrades to the Sassafras Street sidewalk on the city side of the parkway. Those projects are under the jurisdiction of the Erie Western PA Port Authority.
Traffic Impacts
Westbound traffic will continue to be a single lane but will shift south into the unused lane. As part of the shift, a temporary traffic signal will also be put into place at the intersection. There will also be signs to direct bicycle and pedestrian traffic between Sassafras Street Extension and State Street to the designated path separated from the work area by barriers.
The restrictions are expected to be in place throughout the fall.
