Harrisburg, PA – The State Museum of Pennsylvania today announced its program schedule for January 2016:
2016 Pennsylvania Farm Show: The State Museum’s Archaeology program will celebrate the 100th Pennsylvania Farm Show with exhibit aimed at promoting the commonwealth’s rich agricultural heritage. This year’s theme focuses on the development of agriculture in the commonwealth and includes artifacts that illustrate our transition from hunters and gatherers to horticulturists. This exhibit and related programming is presented in cooperation with the Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology, Inc. and the Pennsylvania Archaeological Council. The show runs from January 9 through January, 16, 2016.
Artist Conversation: Pennsylvania Modern: Join us at 6:30 PM Friday, January 15, for a special presentation and tour focusing on the images captured by photographers in The State Museum’s changing exhibit, The Pennsylvania Modern: A Juried Photography Exhibition of Midcentury Modern Architecture. This Artist Conversation features PHMC’s Preservation Architect Andrea Lowery, exhibit curator Amy Hammond and a selection of exhibit photographers. This presentation coincides with the museum’s “3rd in the Burg” event, a monthly celebration of Harrisburg’s arts and entertainment, running from 5:30-7:30 PM. General Admission to the museum is free during the hours of the event.
Pennsylvania Modern: In recognition of the 50th anniversary of The State Museum and Archives Complex, The State Museum presents The Pennsylvania Modern: A Juried Photography Exhibition of Midcentury Modern Architecture. This photography exhibit honors iconic modern architecture throughout the commonwealth. Photographers focused on the details and the overall views of residences, schools, commercial structures, religious buildings, among others. Photographers captured buildings designed by world-famous architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra and Louis Kahn.
Pennsylvania Icons: This new exhibit tells the story of our commonwealth, its people and the role they played in shaping the nation. Visitors will see artifacts related to Pennsylvania’s founder, William Penn, as well as objects from the commonwealth’s lumber, iron, steel, coal and oil industries. Pennsylvania Icons showcases the work of artists such as Charles Willson Peale and Andy Warhol, plus iconic products ranging from Hershey Kisses to Mack Trucks.

Legends of the Night Sky: Orion (Pre-K to 1st Grade):
Narrated by Aesop the owl and Socrates the mouse, this fully animated cartoon takes a light-hearted look at the myths and stories associated with the winter constellation Orion, the great hunter, and how he and his hunting dogs came to be in the night sky.

Star Stories of the Native Americans (Grade 2 and up):
This traditionally styled show explores the night sky legends of the Native Americans. Hear the stories of the great sky bear, the frog sisters and the pathway of souls. Take an up close view of these amazing celestial sights and explore the modern astronomy behind the legends.

Planetarium shows are $3 per person in addition to general admission. Planetarium admission is free to members of the State Museum Affiliate and the Pennsylvania Heritage Foundation.
The State Museum of Pennsylvania, adjacent to the State Capitol in Harrisburg, is one of 25 historic sites and museums administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission as part of the Pennsylvania Trails of History. The State Museum offers expansive collections interpreting Pennsylvania’s fascinating heritage. With exhibits examining the dawn of geologic time, the Native American experience, the colonial and revolutionary era, a pivotal Civil War battleground, and the commonwealth's vast industrial age, The State Museum demonstrates that Pennsylvania's story is America’s story.
Museum hours are Wednesday through Saturday 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Sunday 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Admission is $7 for adults (ages 12-64), $6 for senior citizens (ages 65 and up), and $5 for children (ages 1-11).
