    State Museum of Pennsylvania Announces January Highlights

    Harrisburg, PA – The State Museum of Pennsylvania today announced its program schedule for January 2018:

    StoryTime: Mixed-Up Truck by Stephen Savage, Friday, January 5 10:00 AM
    Gather with us in the Transportation Gallery to talk about trucks of long ago.  Enjoy our story The Mixed-Up Truck by award-winning author Stephen Savage and sing a fun song about construction trucks. StoryTime is our popular series for children 3-5 years. Each reading is held in a gallery and is followed by a related play activity or hands-on exploration of artifacts. StoryTime is included with general admission.
     
    Nature Lab: Craters! For ages 3 to 5, Thursday, January 18 11:30 AM
    Join Museum Educators in Nature Lab to explore Craters! What are they, where do we find then and how are they made? These are just a few of the questions answered. Explore craters with a fun hands-on activity and art project. This program is included with general admission.
     
    3rd in the Burg: Every Thing of Interest Shown, Friday, January 19 12:15-12:45 PM
    3rd in the Burg, Harrisburg’s monthly celebration of art and culture, starts early at The State Museum. Join Senior Curator Curt Miner for a tour of Every Thing of Interest Shown: T.M. Fowler’s Pennsylvania Bird’s-Eye Views, 1885-1905. During a career that spanned nearly 50 years, Thaddeus Mortimer (T.M.) Fowler produced more bird’s eye views of American cities and towns than any other artist. Over half of his more than 400 town views depict communities in Pennsylvania. This new exhibit showcases a sampling of original Fowler lithographic prints produced between 1885-1905. This exhibit is open through May 6, 2018.  This program is included with general admission.
     
    Nature Lab: White-Tailed Deer, Thursday, January 25 11:30 AM
    Join Museum Educators in Nature Lab to discover Pennsylvania’s State Mammal, the white-tailed deer. Through hands-on objects, learn about the animal and its importance to early Native Americans. This program is included with general admission to the Museum.
     
    The Planetarium at The State Museum of Pennsylvania: The planetarium is offering two shows from January 3 through February 25:
     
    Legends of the Night Sky: Perseus & Andromeda (Pre-K to 1st Grade)
    Wednesday, Thursday, & Friday 11:00 AM; Saturday 11:00 AM & 1:00 PM; & Sunday 1:00 PM
     
    For our youngest visitors, this fun-filled, fully-animated show tells the tale of the beautiful princess Andromeda, who in divine punishment for her mother’s bragging, is sacrificed to a sea monster and rescued by the Greek hero Perseus. Come enjoy this light-hearted mythological tale.
     
    Dynamic Earth (4th Grade and up) Wednesday, Thursday, & Friday 1:00 PM; Saturday 12:00 Noon & 2:00 PM; & Sunday 2:00 PM
     
    Explore the inner workings of Earth's climate system. With visualizations based on satellite monitoring data and advanced supercomputer simulations, this cutting-edge production follows a trail of energy that flows from the Sun into the interlocking systems that shape our climate: the atmosphere, oceans, and the biosphere. Narrated by Liam Neeson.
     
    Planetarium shows are $3 per person in addition to general admission. Planetarium admission is free to members of the State Museum Affiliate and the Pennsylvania Heritage Foundation.
     
    The State Museum of Pennsylvania, adjacent to the State Capitol in Harrisburg, is one of 24 historic sites and museums administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission as part of the Pennsylvania Trails of History. The State Museum offers expansive collections interpreting Pennsylvania’s fascinating heritage. With exhibits examining the dawn of geologic time, the Native American experience, the colonial and revolutionary eras, a pivotal Civil War battleground, and the commonwealth's vast industrial age, The State Museum demonstrates that Pennsylvania's story is America’s story.
     
    Museum hours are Wednesday through Saturday 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Sunday 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM.  Admission is $7 for adults (ages 12-64), $6 for senior citizens (ages 65 and up), and $5 for children (ages 1-11).
