An In-School Suspension monitor who is engaged in non-instructional activities in an in-school suspension program such as taking attendance, monitoring student behavior, and facilitating the flow of paperwork from a student's classroom teacher to the suspended student is not required to hold any certification. It should be noted that non-certificated in-school suspension monitors may not have protection under the School Code relating to "En Loco Parentis."
Direct instruction provided in an in-school suspension program must be conducted by an appropriately certified educator. For educators with Level I Instructional certification, time engaged in direct instruction will be charged against the period of validity of an Instructional I certificate and is creditable toward Level II Instructional II certification. Time served as an ISS Monitor that is not engaged in direct instruction will not be charged against the validity of an Instructional I certificate and is not creditable toward Level II Instructional certification.
