The Pennsylvania pork industry ranks 12th in production in the United States. Pennsylvania has over 2,700 independent producers with over 320,000 sows and pigs with the majority of farms having fewer than 25 animals per farm.
Small farms in the state generated more than $2.3 million in sales in 2012. In pigs alone, Pennsylvania ranks as 13th in pounds of pork produced, 12th in total inventory, and 5th in population density.
