Just like goats, sheep are both domesticated and wild. It is estimated that there are more than 10,000 breeds of domesticated sheep that range is all different sizes, colors and different characteristics. The Pennsylvania sheep industry ranks fourth in the nation for the number of sheep producers in a state. There are approximately 3,590 sheep operations. Sheep and lambs in Pennsylvania are collectively valued at nearly $20 million. 

Pennsylvania also ranks 14th for the total number of sheep and lambs — approximately 96,000 per year— produced by a state. The number of sheep and lambs in Pennsylvania increased by 3,000 head between 2017 and 2018. Dairy operations in the Commonwealth are adding sheep for additional income. Other producers are starting small flocks for their families.
