The Bureau of Laboratories' Bacteriology Section performs testing in mycobacteriology, enteric bacteriology and general bacteriology. Testing includes the following: conventional culture, identification, PCR, serogrouping and serotyping of the required isolate submissions, and drug susceptibilities for Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex.
Communicable Disease Regulations
PA State Code, Title 28, Chapter 27 requires isolates of the following organisms be submitted to the Bureau of Laboratories.

- E. coli O157:H7
- Neisseria meningitidis from sterile sites
- Hemophilus influenzae from sterile sites
- Salmonella
- Shiga-like Toxin (isolate or broth culture)
- Shigella
These regulations also require that the Department of Health be notified of cases of the illnesses on the List of Reportable Diseases.
