PDMP Registration

As of January 1, 2017, all individuals lawfully authorized to dispense in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, including mail order and internet sales of pharmaceuticals, must register with the program.

PDMP Portal Query Mandate

As of January 1, 2017, dispensers shall query the PDMP before dispensing an opioid drug product or a benzodiazepine prescribed to a patient if any of the following apply:

  1. The patient is a new patient of the dispenser.
  2. The patient pays cash when they have insurance.
  3. The patient requests a refill early.
  4. The patient is getting opioid drug products or benzodiazepines from more than one prescriber.

Pennsylvania PDMP Data Collection Frequency Mandate

As of January 1, 2017, the data collection frequency changed from within 72 hours to no later than the close of the subsequent business day of dispensing the controlled substances. A business day is any day within the standard five-day business week beginning on Monday and ending on Friday. Note: The PDMP system can accept dispensation data every day, including weekends.

For example: If your pharmacy is open and dispensing controlled substances from Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., then information from all dispensations that occurred on Monday must be submitted to PDMP system by the close of the subsequent business day, i.e., by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. And information from all dispensations that occurred on Friday must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on the following Monday. If your pharmacy is closed on Thursday, you must still submit Wednesday's data by 5:00 p.m. on Thursday.

We recommend contacting your pharmacy software vendor or corporate office immediately to ensure that your dispensations are submitted in compliance with state mandate.

New PDMP Feature: Real-Time Reporting

The Pennsylvania Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PA PDMP) is offering a new, voluntary feature: Real-Time Reporting. This feature allows pharmacies and dispensing practitioners the ability to submit their Schedule II-V controlled substance dispensations to the PA PDMP as they occur. As a result, prescribers and dispensers will be able to review dispensation records for their patients in near real-time.

If you are interested in learning more about this new feature for the PA PDMP, please contact the PA PDMP by calling 844-377-7367, option “0" or emailing ra-dh-pdmp@pa.gov. Our hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. EST.

For assistance in configuring this feature, please contact the PA PDMP system vendor, LogiCoy, directly at 1-844-377-7367, option “1" or by email at papdmp@logicoy.com

Please note: Act 191 of 2014 requires dispensers to report schedule II-V controlled substance dispensations no later than the close of the subsequent business day. This initiative provides a mechanism for dispensers to easily submit data sooner than required.
