Program Overview
Students in courses of study relating to criminal justice may apply.
The Pennsylvania Criminal Intelligence Center (PaCIC) and the Office of Homeland Security may offer internships to a select group of applicants during spring, summer and fall. These are full-time, unpaid internships located in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
PaCIC is Pennsylvania’s primary fusion center. It was established in the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) in 2003 to aid information sharing across all levels of law enforcement. PaCIC analysts assist agencies with investigations and provide intelligence products.
The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security works with agencies of all levels of government, regional task forces, educational institutions, professional and community-based organizations, and the private sector. They build the capabilities necessary to protect against and mitigate the effects of actions that threaten the safety, health and security of Commonwealth residents.
Eligibility Requirements
This internship program offers a rewarding experience for students enrolled in undergraduate or graduate programs, including:
- Criminal Justice
- Criminology
- Homeland Security
- Intelligence Analysis
Students with experience in geographic information systems (GIS) are encouraged to apply.
Additional conditions
Applicants must have satisfactorily completed 60 college credits
Applicants must have no adult criminal conviction graded a misdemeanor 2 or higher as outlined in PA Title 18
Program Highlights
Interns will learn about the activities of each office and perform various tasks.
PaCIC
- Gain a basic understanding of the mission and organizational structure of PSP, BCI & PaCIC.
- Observe, experience, and understand the role of criminal and counterterrorism intelligence and its impact on law enforcement.
- Assist intelligence analysts with support duties including mapping, creating timelines, and creating association charts.
- Gain an understanding of how field members obtain information and provide raw data to the fusion center, and how analysts provide actionable intelligence to the field.
Homeland Security
- Assist in the preparation of homeland security and emergency preparedness training events.
- Assist with the development, preparation, and execution of tabletop exercises.
- Assist with cybersecurity activities, including training and exercise initiatives.
- Research cybersecurity and infrastructure security programs and public and private sector preparedness initiatives.
- Conduct open-source research on cybersecurity and physical security threats and vulnerabilities.
- Provide support for the Homeland Security Grant Program and State Administrative Agency reporting requirements.
- Assist with critical infrastructure protection activities.
