RLEIA Public Agency Responsibilities

Agencies issuing identification cards to retired officers must follow guidelines as set by Pennsylvania law.

Overview

Under the Federal Law Enforcement Officers' Safety Act and the Pennsylvania Retired Law Enforcement Identification Act, only the head of a law enforcement agency/department can issue an identification card to a qualified retired law enforcement officer. Officers will not be issued a retired identification card by an agency other than the one from which they separated having met the eligibility requirements established by law. MPOETC does not issue retired officer identification cards.

Identification cards issued in Pennsylvania must use a standard format and can be produced directly by the department or through a third party vendor as long as they meet the format requirements.
