PennDOT maintains permanent traffic counting devices strategically located throughout the state. These sites collect data on a continuous basis throughout the year. This data is used to develop daily and seasonal factors, as well as to identify changes in traffic patterns. All of the data is reported to the Federal Highway Administration.
- Weigh-in-Motion (WIM) — sites that collect continuous truck weight and vehicle classification data (24/7)
- Continuous Automatic Vehicle Classification (CAVC) — sites that collect continuous vehicle classification data (24/7)
- Automatic Traffic Recorder (ATR) — sites that collect traffic volume data (24/7)
- Short-Term In-Pavement (STIP) — inductive loop sites, considered semi-permanent traffic data collection devices (not 24/7)
