Seasonal Programs

PennDOT supplements its workforce during the summer and winter seasons by hiring temporary workers. Many persons have taken advantage of a temporary position, either during the summer or winter season, to transition into a permanent position.

Summer Maintenance

In Pennsylvania, summer is construction season. Through the Summer Employment Program, PennDOT hires hundreds of seasonal workers from post high school grads to experienced workers to help repair and maintain the roadways and structures throughout the commonwealth.

The following job titles are hired across the state:

  • College Student Summer Workers
  • Custodial Workers
  • Drill Operators
  • Equipment Operator A
  • Equipment Operator B
  • Highway Maintenance Workers
  • Semi-Skilled Laborers
  • Transportation Construction Inspectors
  • Tunnel Maintainers

Winter Maintenance

As summer ends it becomes time to prepare for the winter season. Pennsylvania winters bring extreme weather conditions and the challenges to maintain and clear Pennsylvania's roadways can be constant. Travelers expect safe roads and PennDOT will meet this need by filling many temporary positions during the winter period.

  • Clerks/Radio Dispatchers
  • Custodial Workers
  • Diesel Mechanics
  • Semi-Skilled Laborers
  • Stock Clerks
  • Tradesman Helpers
  • Transportation Equipment Operators
  • Welders
