Nighttime Work, Rolling Stops Scheduled in April
A project to replace the bridge that carries Route 699 (Edinboro Road) over Interstate 90 in Summit Township, Erie County is expected to start early next month.
The bridge is located near the Interstate 79 interchange and approximately three miles north of the intersection with Grub Road (Route 4011).
The project includes the removal of an existing bridge and replacing it with a new 192-foot structure. Work will also include new roadway approaches, paving, updated drainage and guiderail improvements, as well as high tension cable barrier, and new signs and pavement markings.
Work will require a detour for approximately six months starting April 3, 2023. A 7.6-mile detour will be posted using Hershey Road (Route 4010) and Grubb Road.
There will be rolling stops on I-90 and the I-79 ramps to I-90 Monday through Thursday from April 3 to 28 while the beams from the existing bridge are removed. The rolling stops will predominately happen during nighttime work, but some daytime rolling stops might be needed as well.
Additional rolling stops will be needed for work later in the project. There will also be lane restrictions on I-90 near the bridge throughout the construction.
The existing bridge was built in 1959 and rehabilitated in 1987. It is classified as poor condition. Approximately 5,200 vehicles a day use the bridge, on average.
The contractor is MEKIS Construction Corporation of Fenelton, PA. The contract cost is $4,871,478, which is to be paid entirely with state funds.
PennDOT urges motorists to slow down when driving in work zones, and also to be alert to changing conditions, avoid distractions and to pay attention to signs and flaggers. Drive responsibly in work zones for your safety and the safety of the workers.
