I-95 Traffic Shifts Next Week Mark Completion of First Stage of Reconstruction on New Permanent Bridge at Cottman Avenue

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that lane closures are scheduled next week on northbound and southbound Interstate 95 for a traffic shift that marks the completion of the first half of the new bridge to replace the fire damaged structure at the Cottman Avenue Interchange in Northeast Philadelphia.

Motorists are advised of the following travel restrictions:

  • Monday, November 6, northbound I-95 will be reduced to two lanes from 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM, then to one lane from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning through the Cottman Avenue Interchange; and
  • Wednesday, November 8, southbound I-95 will be reduced to two lanes from 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM, then to one lane from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning through the Cottman Avenue Interchange.

Crews each night will move and reset temporary construction barriers and repaint lane markings prior to shifting three lanes of northbound traffic (Monday night) and three lanes of southbound traffic (Wednesday night) onto the outer sections of the new span.

Following the traffic shifts, workers will begin removing the temporary structure in the center of I-95 that has been used to carry traffic since the reopening of the interstate on June 23, less than two weeks after a crash and fire of a tanker truck destroyed the bridge and northbound off-ramp.

The bulk of the material used in construction of the temporary roadway — an ultra-light foamed glass aggregate base provided by a Delaware County manufacturer — will be stored at a PennDOT facility for reuse.

The entire new structure, plus reconstruction of the lower portion of the Cottman Avenue off-ramp, is expected to be completed and the northbound interchange reopened in 2024.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work areas because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.
