Project Overview

County: Erie
State Route: 4034
Local Name: Bayfront Parkway
Project Type: Intersection Improvement and Multimodal Project
Last Updated: August 11, 2023

Improvements at the intersection of State Street and the Bayfront Parkway is expected to be included in Stages 2 and 3 of the project, expected to happen in 2024 and 2025.

Improvements will include construction of the a grade separated intersection. Traffic on the parkway wanting to go straight through the intersection will travel below the intersection. Traffic on the parkway wanting to turn onto State Street will travel above in a smaller intersection than what currently exists. This will significantly decrease the length of the crosswalks for pedestrians wanting to cross the parkway from 86 feet to 31 feet.

Other improvements at the intersection will include bike lanes on State Street toward W. Second Street, completion of missing links within the multi-use trail on the waterfront and turning lanes from State Street onto the parkway.

Also pictured in this rendering above are West Front Street Improvements and upgrades to the Sassafras Street sidewalk on the city side of the parkway. Those projects are under the jurisdiction of the Erie Western PA Port Authority.

Below is a video of the pedestrian experience along the improved State Street.

Pedestrian Walk along State Street

As part of the Bayfront Parkway Improvement Project in the City of Erie, Pennsylvania, a grade-separated intersection will be constructed at State Street. This will reduce the length of the crosswalks from 86 feet to 31 feet and decrease the number of vehicles traveling through the area where pedestrians are crossing.
