Study Underway:

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), Fayette County, and Greene County, in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), will complete an in-depth study for the development and analysis of possible concepts to meet Pennsylvania Route 21 (PA 21) corridors purpose and needs; and to develop design strategies to improve safety and mobility on the transportation network.

The project limits begin on Route 21 at the intersection of Route 19 in Morrisville, Greene County and proceeds east on Route 21 approximately 25 miles to the intersection of Route 40 in Uniontown, Fayette County.

The purpose of this effort is to consider safety updates to meet current traffic conditions. Work will include, but is not limited to:

  • Reviewing existing data, environmental features, and geotechnical conditions
  • Collecting additional traffic counts and crash data where needed along the transportation network
  • Conducting origin and destination surveys to determine existing traffic patterns
  • Evaluating the existing corridor transportation network to determine strategies to improve safety, mobility, and reliability
  • Establishing a public involvement process, including a Project Advisory Committee (PAC), to gather ideas, concerns, and input from stakeholders and the communities within the corridor
  • Holding community outreach sessions

Studies for the project began on August 21, 2024. The design team is being led by Sucevic, Piccolomini and Kuchar, Engineering Inc. (SPK) from Uniontown, PA.

The first PAC meeting is anticipated to be held in the Spring of 2025 at the PennDOT Greene County Maintenance Office located at 129 Jefferson Road, Waynesburg, PA 15370.
