District 6 Projects

U.S. 422 Section M2B Project

Project Overview

County: Chester
Municipality: North Coventry Township
State Route(s): U.S. 422
Local Name(s): Pottstown Bypass
Project Type: Reconstruction

The U.S. 422 Section M2B project involves the total reconstruction of 1.5 miles of limited access expressway on mostly existing alignment. U.S. 422 will be reconstructed with a 9-foot left shoulder, two 12-foot lanes, and a 12-foot right shoulder in each direction of travel. A concrete median barrier will be constructed to separate eastbound and westbound traffic. The western work limit is approximately 850 feet east of the Schuylkill River Bridge between Stowe and Route 100 (Pottstown Pike) Interchanges.  Full-depth reconstruction will match the adjacent project limit of the U.S. 422 Section M2A project. The eastern limit of work is approximately 2,370 feet west of the Keim Street overpass. Section M2B also includes median reconstruction beyond the limits of full-depth reconstruction at the eastern limit.

The vertical alignment will be raised to provide freeboard above the Schuylkill River 100-year floodplain.

Proposed roadside ditches will be designed to convey stormwater from the roadway.

Three bridges carrying U.S. 422 over Laurelwood Road, Route 100 (Pottstown Pike), and Hanover Street will be replaced and widened. A retaining wall is proposed along the eastbound U.S. 422 off-ramp to southbound Route 100 at the Route 100 interchange to reduce impacts to the adjacent Pottstown Landing Historic District.

The interchange ramps at Route 100 (Pottstown Pike) and Hanover Street Interchanges will be reconstructed with full-depth pavement. Acceleration and deceleration lanes will be lengthened.

Sound barriers may be included as part of the construction project along portions of the eastbound U.S. 422 roadway by the approved Draft Final Design Noise Study, based on the voting results from the impacted and benefited residents.

Roadway closed system drainage and cross culverts will be replaced throughout the project. An existing 6’x6’ concrete box culvert under U.S. 422 just west of the Route 100 crossing will be extended and rehabilitated.

This section of  U.S. 422 is one of seven construction packages of the ongoing Pottstown Bypass reconstruction project.
