Green Features of the Governor's Residence

Solar panels on the residence

Green features of the Governor's Residence interior and grounds include:

  • Rain Barrels: Several rain barrels are strategically placed throughout the property to capture and reuse rainwater, helping to prevent stormwater runoff.
  • Solar Panels: Solar panels installed on the south-facing roof of the Residence provide a clean, renewable source of electricity and ensure an uninterrupted power supply for critical communications systems.
  • Ground Source Heat Pump System: The Residence uses a ground source heat pump (GSHP) system, also known as a geothermal heat pump, which replaced the previous electric resistance heating. This system concentrates existing heat rather than burning fossil fuels, providing both heating and supplemental cooling.
  • Reduction of Paper Products: The Residence has significantly reduced the use of paper products, including paper plates, plastic cups, and bottled water at events.
  • Recycling Program: Glass, plastic, paper, and cardboard are actively recycled at the Residence.
  • Herb and Vegetable Gardens: The Residence features an herb garden and raised vegetable beds, with produce used for cooking on-site.
  • Hydroponic Garden: To meet the need for fresh herbs and vegetables during winter months or for crops that don't thrive on the grounds, the Residence has established an indoor hydroponic garden.
  • Beekeeping: The Residence hosts honey-producing beehives, and in 2017, observation beehives were installed to allow children to observe the honey-making process and learn about the vital role bees play in the environment.
