State Board of Education

Student Representation

In an effort to broaden the perspective and experience of the Pennsylvania State Board of Education, the Board changed its bylaws in May 2008 to incorporate student representation on the Board in a non-voting capacity.

This includes one senior student member and one junior student member on both the Council of Basic Education and the Council of Higher Education. These positions for student representatives will provide Pennsylvania high school and college students with an unprecedented opportunity to interact with the 21 adult board members and to help shape long-term education policy for the 1.7 million pre-K through 12th grade students in our state and the nearly 660,000 students impacted by our higher education institutions. Student members must attend and participate in board meetings, advise and consult with the board, and adhere to board regulations.

The Pennsylvania Association of Student Councils (PASC) is responsible for recommending two (2) high school students to hold the positions on the Council of Basic Education. Please direct any questions regarding these positions or the application process to RoseAnn Fulena, Executive Director of the PASC: 724-651-0973 or PASC.exdir@gmail.com. Visit the Pennsylvania Association of Student Councils website for application information.

Higher education student representatives are nominated to represent the various postsecondary sectors (community colleges, state-owned universities, state-related universities, and private and for-profit institutions) on a rotating basis.

Student membership is made possible through a grant provided by Highmark.
