HARRISBURG -- Serving in his constitutional role as president of the state Senate, Lt. Gov. Austin Davis today set the date for a special election in Pennsylvania’s 36th Senate District for Tuesday, March 25.
State Sen. Ryan Aument resigned on Dec. 31, leaving the 36th District seat vacant. Under the state Election Code, when there is a vacancy in the state legislature, the presiding officer of the House or Senate has 10 days to issue a writ of election for a special election to fill the seat. The special election can be held no sooner than within 60 days of the writ being issued.
“The people of Pennsylvania’s 36th Senate District deserve to have representation as lawmakers are considering the state budget and the many important issues facing our Commonwealth,” said Davis. “After consulting with Senate Republican and Democratic leaders, I’ve decided to schedule the special election for this seat on Tuesday, March 25. I encourage all eligible voters in the district to make their voices heard at the ballot box on or before that date.
“Finally, I wish Senator Aument all the best in his new role serving the people of Pennsylvania as Senator McCormick’s state director. It’s been great working with him in the Senate, and I hope we can continue to collaborate on state and federal issues.”
