Harrisburg, PA – The Shapiro Administration is supporting cleanup and recovery efforts in Schuylkill County after a tornado in Mahanoy City on Monday evening. After the tornado touched down Monday night, Governor Shapiro personally called Schuylkill County leaders to pledge his Administration's support.
“The tornados across Pennsylvania this month have been devastating, and I stand committed to helping Pennsylvanians recover and rebuild stronger than before," said Governor Josh Shapiro. “I've been in touch with local leaders and we're ready to support them in any way we can."
The National Weather Service confirmed that an EF-1 tornado with peak winds of 90 miles per hour traveled for about 1.5 miles in Mahanoy City, uprooting trees and damaging homes and buildings. No injuries were reported.
PEMA staff were in Schuylkill County to assess damages along with county personnel. The Pennsylvania Department of Education also contacted Mahanoy Area School District officials after the tornado damaged school property.
“As a native of Schuylkill County, I know that the people there are resilient and help one another as much as they can," said PEMA Director Randy Padfield. “Our agency will work closely with local emergency management and volunteer organizations to provide any assistance that may be needed in the days and weeks ahead."
Anyone who sustained damages to their primary residence or business as a result of the tornado is encouraged to contact their insurance company and also report their damages to their municipal or county emergency management office.
