The Pennsylvania Asthma Control Program (ACP) is made up of the Pennsylvania Department of Health, funded partners, and the Pennsylvania Asthma Partnership. Through funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the ACP works to improve the quality of life for those living with asthma by implementing strategies shown to work particularly in areas with high asthma rates, and strengthening leadership, partnerships, and communications needed for the long-term. Over time, these actions will reduce the number of deaths, hospitalizations, emergency department visits, school days or workdays missed, and limitations on activity due to asthma.

The ACP is using the six EXHALE strategies below to address asthma:

  • Asthma is a chronic lung disease impacting individuals at all stages of life. It is one of the most common long-term diseases in children.
  • Genetic, environmental, and work-related factors have been linked to developing asthma, but some factors that cause asthma are not yet known.
  • Asthma causes wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and coughing at night or early in the morning.
  • An asthma attack can happen when exposed to asthma triggers.
  • Asthma requires ongoing medical management. With help from a doctor, asthma can be controlled by taking medicine and avoiding triggers.
