The lake was drained in 2012 after severe deficiencies were found in the dam, and then breached in 2017 [press release] with no plans to rebuild the dam. It received minimal use, in part because of the difficulty reaching it. Also, agency biologists report that the lake was a poor fishery because of acidic water.
The property is open to the public for recreational use such as hiking. It is accessible only by a five-mile, unpaved road through State Game Land 57. The Commission is managing the property in coordination with some assistance from the Luzerne County Conservation District for the benefit of aquatic life.
