    PA Historical and Museum Commission Awarded $1.5 Million for Hurricane Sandy Historic Preservation Recovery Project

    Harrisburg – The National Park Service has awarded $1,500,000 to the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) to undertake disaster-related relief and planning initiatives in the 18 counties that received federal disaster declarations after Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

    Those counties include Bedford, Bucks, Cameron, Dauphin, Forest, Franklin, Fulton, Huntingdon, Juniata, Monroe, Montgomery, Northampton, Philadelphia, Pike, Potter, Somerset, Sullivan, and Wyoming.

    The funds will support reimbursement for selected historic properties to repair storm-related damage, undertake hazard mitigation planning, develop model guidance, and provide training and educational programs on disaster-related topics.

    “History has shown that Pennsylvania’s historic communities can be significantly impacted by storms that bring high winds and heavy rains,” said Serena Bellew, Director of PHMC’s Bureau for Historic Preservation. “This allows us to be proactive and create new partnerships with local communities to expand their disaster planning so we can be better prepared for the future,” she added.

    The federal government appropriated a total of $50 million from the Historic Preservation Fund (HPF) for historic preservation projects providing relief for damages in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia caused by Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Pennsylvania applied for and received the maximum grant amount.

    A sub-grant program, administered by PHMC will be developed to reimburse the cost of repairs to historic properties that were damaged by Hurricane Sandy. Only Hurricane Sandy-related damage is eligible for grant assistance.
