Direct File Toolkit

The Department of Revenue (DOR) is partnering with the U.S. Department of Treasury and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to offer Direct File, a free and secure online tax filing tool. The goal of this initiative is to save Pennsylvanians hundreds of dollars and hours of time by making tax filing fast, secure, and free.

How You Can Help

As a partner of DOR, you can help spread the word about Direct File via your communications channels, including social media, websites, newsletters, emails, etc. Specifically:

  • Explain how Direct File allows Pennsylvanians to easily file federal and state taxes online for free.
  • Highlight the fact that roughly 2.1 million Pennsylvanians are currently eligible to use Direct File, helping them avoid paying hundreds of dollars to file their taxes elsewhere.
  • Help the Department of Revenue and its federal partners reduce tax season stress for PA residents by connecting them with a free and helpful online tax-filing tool.

General #DirectFile Material

You can use general #DirectFile material to let people know that this new online tool is available. You can direct them to pa.gov/directfile for additional information. Here’s a timeline of suggested actions to focus on: 

January 2025

  • Begin active promotion as the tax season approaches/begins
  • Send out email notifications and social media promotions encouraging early filing.

February 2025

  • Continue general promotion of Direct File
  • Highlight the benefits of using Direct File during peak filing times, including Presidents Day weekend.

March to April 2025

  • Increase outreach leading up to the final deadline on Tax Day, Tuesday, April 15, 2025.
  • Send reminders to Pennsylvanians about the approaching deadline and the availability of Direct File.
