Project Overview
County: Crawford
Municipality: Hayfield and Woodcock townships
State Route: Route 6
Project Type: Bridge Replacement
Proposed Construction Start: 2025
Last Updated: November 12, 2024
This project is to replace the bridge that carries Route 6 over French Creek at the border of Hayfield and Woodcock townships just south of the Borough of Saegertown in Crawford County.
The project will replace the bridge at the existing location with a new two-span steel plate girder structure. The roadway across the bridge will have 11-foot travel lanes and 5-foot shoulders. The project also includes reconstructing the approach roadway pavement, upgrading guide rail and pavement markings, and placing rock to stabilize roadside slopes.
The existing through-truss bridge was built in 1936. It is classified as poor condition. Approximately 7,200 vehicles a day use the bridge, on average.
A contract for the work was award in 2024 with work expected to happen in 2025. The contractor is MEKIS Construction Corporation and the contract cost is $6,750,575.42.
Detour
A detour will be required during construction and is expected to be in place for approximately six months. The proposed 4.6-mile detour for motorized vehicles will be posted using Interstate 79, Route 6, Route 198 (Brookhouser Road).
A bicycle detour will be posted using Jordan Drive.
Additional Route 6 Bridge Project
A second Route 6 bridge replacement project is also being designed for the truss bridge carrying Route 6 over French Creek at the border of Hayfield and Woodcock townships, about one mile outside of Saegertown. Construction of the bridges will be handled by separate contracts.
Project Overview
The project involves the replacement of the Route 6 bridge over French Creek in Hayfield and Woodcock townships, Crawford County. The bridge will be replaced in its entirety, including new abutments and piers. Roadway work will be required to adjust the elevation to match the new bridge. A public comment period for the project was held in July and August. Work is expected to take place in 2027.
