Project Overview
County: Berks
Municipality: Rockland Township
State Route: 1029
Local Name: Smoketown Road
Project Type: Bridge Replacement
Proposed Construction Start: 2026
Last Updated: September 2025
State Route 1029/Smoketown Road bridge over Sacony Creek in Rockland Township, Berks County was closed in May 2021 due to severe scour from heavy rain. The project involves replacing the previously removed rolled steel I-beam bridge that carried Smoketown Road over Sacony Creek with a single-span composite prestressed spread box beam structure.
The bridge replacement project will also incorporate realigning and restoring Sacony Creek through the project site. The redesigned channel will improve the alignment with the proposed bridge, increase sinuosity and floodplain connectivity, reduce shear stress adjacent to the bridge and stabilize the streambed elevations.
The purpose of the project is to reinstate a safe and efficient access for the traveling public that meets current design criteria.
Additional Project Information
The construction of the bridge will be performed using a full detour. A detour map has been provided, which shows a detour which utilizes the same detour that is currently in place for the closed bridge. The detour length is approximately 6 miles utilizing State Routes 1022 (Fredericksville Road), 1021 (Lyons Road), 1013 (Bowers Road) and 1010 (State Street). Access to properties within the project limits will be maintained during construction.
