Project Overview

County: Adams
Municipality: Straban Township and Tyrone Township
State Route: 1017-006
Local Name: Red Bridge Road over Conewago Creek
Project Type: Bridge Superstructure Replacement
MPMS Number: 78642
Proposed Construction Start: April 2027
Proposed Construction End: October 2027
Last Updated: August 2025

The project includes the superstructure replacement and rehabilitation of the Route 1017 Section 006 bridge (Red Bridge Road) over Conewago Creek in Straban and Tyrone Townships, Adams County. The purpose of this project is to provide a continued safe and efficient crossing on Route 1017 over Conewago Creek.

Within the project area, Route 1017 is a two-lane roadway located in a predominately agricultural setting on level terrain and is classified as a Rural Local Road. The land use surrounding the roadway is predominantly fields/pasture area. The roadway within the project limits has a posted speed limit of 40 miles per hour and an average daily traffic volume of 306 vehicles per day.

The existing structure was built in 1962 and is a three-span non-composite prestressed concrete box beam bridge supported on reinforced concrete abutments and piers. The bridge length is 210’-6” and has a curb-to-curb width of 28’-0”.

The project involves the replacement of the bridge superstructure, reconstruction of beam seats, and rock scour protection around abutments and piers. Minor approach roadway work including pavement reconstruction, rock slope protection, and guide rail upgrades will also be performed. The roadway alignment will closely match the existing geometry. The roadway and bridge will be slightly widened to accommodate 11-feet lanes and 4-feet shoulders, providing a 30-feet curb-to-curb width.

Route 1017 will be detoured during construction.

The project is currently in design, and construction is expected to occur during the 2027 construction season.

The purpose of the plans display is to introduce the project and solicit public input, questions, or concerns regarding the project.
